Trace Fowler and Nick Kirby break down the injury to Cincinnati Reds superstar SS Elly De La Cruz after he exited Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Braves. They discuss exactly what happened, the latest updates on Elly’s condition, what the Reds could do if he misses time, and how long Cincinnati can realistically survive without one of the most dynamic players in baseball. Plus, they talk about the impact on the Reds lineup, potential roster moves, and much more.

# Elly De La Cruz Injury Update: Latest on the Cincinnati Reds Superstar and What Comes Next

The biggest storyline surrounding the Cincinnati Reds right now is the health of superstar shortstop Elly De La Cruz after he exited Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Braves with a right hamstring injury.

While the Reds were able to hold on for a 6-4 win over Atlanta, all attention quickly shifted to De La Cruz after he abruptly left the game in the fifth inning.

What Happened to Elly De La Cruz?

De La Cruz was enjoying one of his best games in recent weeks before the injury occurred. He went 2-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base, and two runs scored as Cincinnati built an early lead against Braves ace Spencer Strider.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, De La Cruz ripped a ball into the right-center field gap that appeared destined to be an extra-base hit. However, as he rounded first base, he suddenly slowed down and immediately grabbed at his right leg. Rather than attempting to stretch the hit into a double, De La Cruz stopped at first base and signaled that something was wrong.

After a brief conversation with Reds trainers and manager Terry Francona, De La Cruz exited the game and walked off the field under his own power. The Reds later announced that he left the game with right hamstring tightness.

## Latest Injury Update

The good news for the Reds is that De La Cruz appeared optimistic after the game.

De La Cruz said he immediately stopped running because he felt continuing could make the injury worse. He also said he does not believe the injury is serious, although the team is expected to learn much more after an MRI scheduled for Monday morning.

The fact that De La Cruz was able to walk off the field on his own and did not require assistance is certainly encouraging. However, hamstring injuries can be unpredictable, particularly for a player whose game relies so heavily on elite speed.

Francona also appeared cautiously optimistic after the game, saying the club would wait for MRI results before determining the severity of the injury.

## Why This Injury Is Such a Big Deal

There is simply no replacing Elly De La Cruz.

The 24-year-old has once again been one of the most electrifying players in Major League Baseball this season. Through 58 games, De La Cruz is batting .280 with an .855 OPS, 12 home runs, 37 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases while serving as the centerpiece of Cincinnati’s lineup.

His impact goes far beyond the stat sheet.

De La Cruz changes games with his speed, forces defensive mistakes, creates scoring opportunities, and provides the Reds with a dynamic presence that few players in baseball can match. When he is healthy, opposing pitchers and defenses must account for him every second he is on the field.

That makes any potential absence a major concern for a Reds team that is trying to stay in the National League playoff race.

## Who Could Replace Elly De La Cruz?

If De La Cruz misses time, the Reds have several options.

During Sunday’s game, Matt McLain replaced De La Cruz at shortstop after entering as a pinch runner. McLain has previous experience at the position and would likely see significant time there if needed.

The Reds could also consider shifting other infield pieces around the diamond depending on matchups.

Another possibility is top prospect Edwin Arroyo. Arroyo has continued to impress in Triple-A and has long been viewed as a future major league shortstop. While the Reds have not indicated any plans to promote him, De La Cruz missing significant time would certainly increase speculation about a potential call-up.

## The Reds Cannot Afford More Injury Problems

The timing of this injury scare is particularly concerning because Cincinnati is already dealing with several health issues across the roster.

Just days ago, the Reds moved reliever Graham Ashcraft to the 60-day injured list with a forearm injury. The club has spent much of the season trying to navigate injuries while remaining competitive in a crowded National League race.

Losing their most important position player for any extended period would be a significant challenge.

For now, the Reds and their fans are holding their breath while awaiting MRI results.

There are reasons for optimism. De La Cruz stopped running immediately, walked off under his own power, and expressed confidence that the injury is not serious. Those are all positive signs.
