Switzerland's Audrey Werro ran 1:53.98 to win the Stockholm Diamond League – Diamond League record, a personal best by nearly two seconds, and the first time any woman has broken 1:54 since 1983. Only Jarmila Kratochvilova (1:53.28) and Nadezhda Olizarenko (1:53.43) have ever run faster, both more than 40 years ago, both under clouds of suspicion from the Eastern Bloc doping era. For many track fans, Werro's 1:53.98 could be viewed as the first clean sub-1:54 in history and the real world record.
Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson ran 1:54.33 for second. It's a personal best. It's the sixth-fastest 800m ever recorded.
In this video, we break down what just happened: how the race actually unfolded and what it means for the women's 800m heading into the rest of the season — including Keely's stated world record attempt in London on July 18.
