Japan vs Serbia | Highlights | Men's VNL 2026. The second week of the qualifying round of the "Volleyball Nations League 2026" (VNL) took place in Orleans, France, starting on Wednesday, June 24th.

The Japanese men's volleyball team, ranked 5th in the FIVB world rankings (as of the start of the match), faced Serbia, ranked 9th, on Wednesday, June 24th Japan time, and won in sets 3-1 (25-17, 25-15, 22-25, 25-16), bringing their overall record to 5 wins and 0 losses.

In the first set, Japan's first point came with a back attack by Yuji Nishida. They then broke serve again after Taishi Onodera's serve to take a 5-2 lead. With stable serve reception, they launched a variety of attacks, and Onodera's quick attack and Yuki Ishikawa's back attack from a rally secured the lead for Japan. After that, they continued to score points with Nishida's soft shots and extended their lead to 16-9. Then, Shoma Tomita, who came in as a relief server, scored a service ace, and Japan, who had led throughout the set, won the first set 25-17.

The second set started with Ishikawa scoring with a high set. Ishikawa's serve was in good form, and consecutive points were scored against them. Then, Onodera made a block and a good receive, giving them a big lead of 18-8. At the end, Onodera scored with a quick attack to win the set 25-15.

In the third set, Ishikawa's spike got Japan off to a good start, but Serbia's blocks caught up with the score, putting Japan behind 3-6 in the early stages. Japan scored points through tenacious defense, and after making a double substitution with Miyaura Kento and Nagaro Motoki, they gradually gained momentum. Evadedan Larry's block narrowed the gap to one point, but Serbia broke through with blocks, and Japan lost the set 22-25.

In the fourth set, Ishikawa's service ace and Takahashi Ran's block gave Japan a 6-3 lead. Serbia broke the serve and seemed to be shifting the momentum, but Takahashi Ran inspired the team with a powerful back attack and a service ace, extending the lead to 14-7. Serbia scored another service ace, but Takahashi Ran made a block to make it 19-12, prompting Serbia to call a timeout. Japan continued to score points, and finally Miyaura scored the winning point to secure the set 25-16, winning the set 3-1.
