If you want to swim faster, you need to "frost the cake." ๐
If you want to genuinely level up your freestyle technique, you need to master a drill called Sculling.
This drill isn't about testing your lat strengthโit is about developing an elite feel for the water. Imagine you are spreading icing smoothly across the surface. By activating your forearms instead of muscling through, you lock in the perfect catch.
Here is the ultimate sculling progression to build your water feel:
๐ Start Upright: Tread water using wide, sweeping hand motions. Build resistance instead of relying on small, choppy pulls.
๐คฟ Get Prone: Lean forward onto your stomach. Add a snorkel or a pull buoy to float your legs and completely isolate your upper body.
๐ The Front Scull: Keep your hands above your shoulders and drive your fingertips straight down to the bottom of the pool. This is exactly how you build an Early Vertical Forearm (EVF).
๐ Push the Stroke: Progress the drill by moving the sculling motion to your shoulders, and finally pushing the water past your hips.
The more vertical your forearm becomes during this drill, the faster your actual pulling technique will be in a race. It is that simple.
