The Cincinnati Bengals enter the 2026 season with a realistic chance to return to the playoffs because they addressed the biggest weakness that derailed recent campaigns: the defense. Rather than relying on incremental improvements, Cincinnati made aggressive moves to reshape the front seven and secondary. The headline acquisition was defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, whose presence should transform the interior of the defensive line by creating pressure, stuffing the run, and opening opportunities for teammates. Veteran additions such as Jonathan Allen, Boye Mafe, and Bryan Cook also provide experience and physicality to a unit that struggled with consistency a year ago.

While losing Trey Hendrickson removes one of the NFL’s premier pass rushers, the Bengals are betting that improved depth and a more balanced defensive front will compensate for his departure. Young players like Shemar Stewart and rookie Cashius Howell will be counted on to generate pressure, making their development one of the biggest storylines of the season.
Offensively, Cincinnati remains built around Joe Burrow, one of football’s elite quarterbacks when healthy. With Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins continuing to headline one of the league’s most dangerous receiving corps, the Bengals possess the firepower to compete with anyone. The offensive line also enters the season with greater continuity, an important factor after injuries and inconsistency disrupted previous years.
The AFC North remains one of the NFL’s toughest divisions, meaning nothing will come easily. Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland all present difficult matchups, and Cincinnati will need its defensive overhaul to pay immediate dividends. Still, the Bengals appear far more complete than they did entering last season.
If the revamped defense performs even at an above-average level while Burrow and the offense maintain their usual production, Cincinnati has every reason to believe it can contend for a Wild Card berth and potentially challenge for the AFC North title. The talent is in place, the roster is deeper, and expectations are once again justified heading into the 2026 campaign.
