The Cincinnati Reds finally found a way to close out a tight game Saturday afternoon, edging the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-1 behind clutch late-game heroics from Noelvi Marte and an encouraging all-around pitching effort at Great American Ball Park. Marte delivered the defining moment of the afternoon when he launched a go-ahead solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, snapping a 1-1 tie and giving Cincinnati a desperately needed win after several frustrating late-game losses over the past week.

The Reds got a strong outing from Rhett Lowder, who looked much sharper than he had in recent starts. The young right-hander attacked the strike zone early and kept Arizona’s lineup from generating much consistent offense. Lowder mixed his fastball and breaking pitches effectively, limiting damage while giving Cincinnati valuable innings in a low-scoring game. After some recent struggles with command, this was an important bounce-back performance for one of the organization’s key young arms.
Edwin Arroyo continued to show why the Reds are excited about his future. Batting leadoff, the rookie infielder brought energy to the lineup and played a steady game defensively. Arroyo’s athleticism and composure continue to stand out, and his presence near the top of the order gave Cincinnati a spark throughout the afternoon.
Marte’s swing in the eighth completely changed the atmosphere in the ballpark. After managing just one run through seven innings, Cincinnati finally broke through when Marte turned on a pitch from Juan Morillo and drove it out to left-center for the game-winning blast — his second homer of the season. The moment was made even bigger considering how much the Reds have struggled to come through in late-game situations recently.
Out of the bullpen, Chase Petty and Tony Santillan helped slam the door shut. Petty continued adjusting to a relief role and delivered important outs in the middle innings, while Santillan handled the pressure late once again. After some bullpen collapses earlier in the week, Cincinnati’s relievers answered the challenge Saturday and preserved the narrow lead all the way to the final out.
The win gave the Reds an opportunity to build momentum heading into the series finale and offered a reminder of what this young roster can look like when its emerging core steps up in big moments.
