One of the toughest things players slowly learn is how to deal with disappointment.
What’s so frustrating about it is two things:- Too much disappointment over time leads many players to work less hard
- And then coaches just end up labelling them as lazy
The issue there is that calling players lazy isn’t helping them get back into action
Because if you trained your ass off season after season and kept failing
It’s pretty natural when you’re 14, 16 or even 20 to start thinking “What’s the point?”
It’s not an insane thing for players to think about
And often times what’s kept players stuck in these loops is a lack of quality information telling them what the REAL issues are in their game
Imagine a player who has been going to the gym 4x a week and doing extra reps at home
But really the issue in his game is… he can’t make smart decisions on the ice
No amount of extra squats and stick handling sessions is gonna fix that hockey IQ issue
But if the player isn’t able to find the right coaches or information to start fixing that issue
We can’t be surprised that later down the line they start giving up on the workouts and stick handling too a little
So before we call players lazy, maybe we need to first ask what players think the biggest issues are in their game? And from there see if they are right or need to be shown what the real gap is more clearly in their development.
