His height had long been seen purely as a negative, but stark differences often hide advantages beneath the surface. His unique build brought forth graceful yet powerful movement. He wasn't a pocket passer or strictly a runner; young Russel Wilson was something else entirely, a different way to play a position that shunned him his whole life.
Russell Wilson wasn't supposed to start his first game in the NFL. But there he was on the field making throws and moving the sticks.
14 years earlier, he sat on the bench in his very first organized football game. He’d only practiced with the team for a single practice; he wasn't quite ready to be on the field.
But on the first pass play of the game, the starting QB took a really bad hit and was out for the season; a few moments later Russ was kneeling in the huddle. He hadn't learned a single play, and everyone was counting on him.
He didn't know what to do, so he faked it. He did what he saw people do in the movies.
He put on this act, you the one… super synthetic hyperconfidence. Like a young boy imitating his favorite superhero, he drew up the plan right there in the dirt.
Guess what? It worked. He scored TD after TD and led his team to a 56- 14 win.
Russel learned a valuable but dangerous lesson. Faking it could bring you massive success.
He had natural talent, an insane work ethic, great intelligence, and hella heart. But given his size, he felt he needed that extra advantage. Over time, this simply became his public persona; it made a great first impression in every room he entered. But if he stayed in that room for any length of time, that impression would often be turned on its head.
Sometimes it can be hard to access the real Russ, as it feels like he is always trying to give you what he thinks u want. His awkwardness can be endearing at times, but other times…it can be straight-up annoying.
Now I think it all comes from a good place; I honestly think Russ is a good dude. But several of the stories you hear can sometimes seem to suggest otherwise. Though a part of me thinks maybe things are misunderstood or lost in translation. Though of course I'm not sure.
I think that day, drawing plays in the dirt showed Russ that faking it works most of the time. I think that throughout his life, when faced with difficult situations, he acted on what he thought he should do. Who he thought he should be. How he thought he should dress. And I wonder if he's truly even comfortable with himself.
Who are we kidding? The world doesn't make it easy. We can look to Russ's teammate, mashawn lynch, a guy who refused to conform and was always himself. He had stones thrown at him throughout his career; it wasn't until the very end that he received universal love.
The last few years of Russ's career have cast a fog over the truth about Russ at his peak as a player. He helped change the position, didn't fit the physical mold, and had unbelievable success for 10 years in this league. If the last 4 seasons never happened, I think we remember dude in a completely different way.
