With their playoff hopes hanging in the balance, the Islanders defeated Toronto 5-3 in Peter DeBoer's first game as the team's head coach. Star rookie Matthew Schaefer, who scored his 23rd goal of the season to put the Isles ahead for good, described DeBoer's presence behind the bench as "awesome." Defenseman Tony DeAngelo saw a much more concerted effort to control odd-man rushes and the new head coach himself deemed it "a solid start."
