The 2026 USATF Half Marathon Championships in Atlanta ended in chaos when a lead vehicle guided the top three women off course with just over a mile to go — costing Jess McClain a national title, $20,000 in prize money, and potentially her spot on Team USA for the World Championships in Copenhagen. USATF upheld the results. The running world erupted online. On the latest episode of This Week In Track and Field on The CITIUS MAG Podcast, Chris Chavez and Preet Majithia break down exactly what happened, who's to blame, and why there's no clean fix.

What you need to know
What happened: Multiple official vehicles made a wrong turn at an intersection 1.2 miles from the finish. McClain, Emma Grace Hurley, and Ednah Kurgat followed instinctively and ran off-course for 80 seconds. Molly Born, who was fifth at the time, stayed on course and won.

Why it matters: This race also had three automatic selections to the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen. Born, Carrie Ellwood and Annie Rodenfels now hold those spots.

What USATF said: The jury of appeals acknowledged the course was inadequately marked — then upheld the results anyway, saying the rulebook left them no other option.

The catch: Getting McClain, Hurley, and Kurgat onto the World Championship team through existing rules requires a voluntary chain of declinations from multiple athletes. It's possible. It's not simple.

The bottom line: Everyone agrees on what the right outcome is. The rulebook doesn't make it easy to get there.
