Norman Powell Dilemma: Pay Him, Trade Him, or Let Him Walk? What should the Miami Heat do?
Basketball
In this episode of Miami Heat Talk, we break down one of the biggest offseason decisions facing the Miami Heat — what should they do with Norman Powell?
After an incredible start to the season where Powell averaged over 25 points per game and earned his FIRST NBA All-Star selection, things took a turn in the second half. Injuries began to pile up, his production dipped, and at 32 years old, serious questions are starting to form about his long-term value.
Now the Heat are faced with THREE major options:
• Let him walk in free agency and lose him for nothing
• Re-sign him to a massive contract (up to 4 years, $128M)
• Work out a sign-and-trade to get value in return
The situation becomes even more complicated when you consider how little Miami gave up to acquire him — Kevin Love, Kyle Anderson, and a second-round pick. Losing that asset for nothing would be tough… but is committing long-term money even riskier?
I also dive into:
• Whether Powell’s first half was sustainable
• If injuries are now a long-term concern
• Why a short-term deal could make sense
• And how the Heat could use his contract in a future trade
This is a defining decision for the Miami Heat’s future — and it could shape the direction of the franchise moving forward.
