Kenyan middle-distance runner David Rudisha has shaped the 800 m like no other. He made history at the 2012 Olympic Games in London: in the final, he led from the start and set the world record that still stands today with a time of 1:40.91 minutes – becoming the first athlete to break the 1:41 barrier and simultaneously world record holder, world champion, and Olympic champion. He had already broken the record set by his compatriot Wilson Kipketer and collected international titles. Four years later, he defended his gold medal in Rio in 2016 – the first 800 m runner to do so in 50 years.
