Emerson Hancock was the 6th overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft. Four shoulder injuries, two stints in Triple-A, and a 4.90 ERA later, most people forgot he existed. While George Kirby, Bryan Woo, and Bryce Miller rose to stardom in Seattle's rotation, Hancock was the 6th man — only called up when someone else got hurt.
Then he changed everything. He dropped his arm slot from 27 degrees to 13. Ditched the sinker-slider approach he'd used his entire career. Built a brand-new arsenal around a four-seam fastball and a sweeper that generates a 32% whiff rate. And on May 2, 2026 — the night Seattle retired Randy Johnson's No. 51 — Hancock struck out 14 with zero walks. The most strikeouts by any pitcher in baseball this season.
This is the story of one of the most fascinating breakouts in MLB right now.
