At 19 years old, during a global pandemic, Nate Harriel passed on college entirely and signed a professional soccer contract with the Philadelphia Union. No safety net. No guarantee of minutes. No roadmap. Just a decision he had to make about who he believed he was before anyone else could confirm it.

He now leads MLS in interceptions, has captained the Union in Concacaf Champions Cup play, represented the USMNT at the 2024 Paris Olympics, played in the 2025 Gold Cup final, and recently signed a new contract through 2028. The bet paid off. This episode is about what it actually cost him mentally to make it.

In Episode 8 of The Pressure Lab, Keith Wilford sits down with Nate Harriel and Sizzy Lawton, former Penn and Tennessee soccer standout and current Stryker professional, to answer one of the most important questions in youth sports: how do athletes build real mental toughness without external validation, a crowd, or a guarantee?

Sizzy's story runs parallel. While Nate was signing his first contract, Sizzy was watching every other Division I conference go back to competing while the Ivy League canceled its season entirely. She trained alone, made a decision, and chose Tennessee over safer options. One season. SEC All-Conference. Second round of the NCAAs.
