Nathan Martin's historic 0.18-second victory over Kenya's Michael Kimani Kamau came only partyly because Kamau was led off course in the final quarter mile.
What happened: With roughly 300 meters to go, Kamau followed a lead vehicle as it made its planned exit off the course. A spectator draped in a Kenyan flag was running directly on the course ahead of him, blocking his view of an official trying to redirect him. Kamau came to a complete stop, turned around, and retraced his steps...losing by 0.18 seconds.
The response: No protests were filed, and the LA Marathon released a statement Monday standing by the results, pointing to the spectator's behavior as "cause for concern" while stopping short of accepting organizational responsibility. The statement made no mention of prize money for Kamau.
The money at stake: First place paid $25,000. Second paid $10,000.
