JKJacob Kiplimo

According to a report from Runner’s World Spain, 🇺🇬Jacob Kiplimo’s 56:42 half marathon world record set at last year’s Barcelona Half Marathon will NOT be ratified by World Athletics.

For months, there’s been speculation over whether Kiplimo was aided by his proximity to the lead pace car. World Athletics has not set any rule for the distance a race vehicle must be positioned relative to the leading athlete. However, Kiplimo was estimated to be 10 to 20 meters behind the vehicle that displayed the race clock all throughout the race.

Kiplimo’s performance took 48 seconds off 🇪🇹 Yomif Kejelcha’s previous world record. Kejelcha’s 57:30 from the 2024 Valencia Half Marathon will remain the world record recognized by World Athletics.

The 2026 Barcelona Half Marathon is on February 15th.

Kiplimo is currently preparing for the London Marathon in April. Kejelcha is set to make his marathon debut there.

On Monday, World Athletics ratified three world records, but Kiplimo’s half marathon was not among them.
