AnalysisFemke BolRunning

Dutch track star Femke Bol successfully debuted in the 800m distance, running a national record 1:59.07. It marked her first race beyond 500 meters and an early data point in a deliberate shift toward middle-distance racing.

As noted by Kyle Merber on the podcast, that's likely the fastest 800m debut ever for an elite athlete. It comes only a few months of training after her 2025 season ended in September

How it went down: Bol allowed pacemaker Anna Gryc to control the early tempo, wisely avoiding the common pitfall for 400m specialists of going out too hard. Gryc hit 400m in 56.66, with Bol tracking closely around 57 seconds. From there, Bol entered unfamiliar territory, easing slightly through the third 200 before lifting again on the final lap. She never appeared strained and ran unimpeded throughout.

By the numbers:
1:59.07 — Bol's Dutch record debut time (#5 on 2026 world list)
1:57.43 — Current world lead by Izzy Boffey
57.0 — Her 400m split (very controlled pacing)
Beat four women who've all broken 2:00 multiple times
Her 800m debut roughly equals her 200m personal best on WA scoring tables

Next up: Bol will race 600m at the World Indoor Tour meet in Liévin on February 19.
