Katy Zang Destroys Mary Cain's U.S. High School 2-Mile Record In 9:37.15 At New Balance Nationals
Running
Teays Valley senior and Indiana commit Katie Zang ran 9:37.15 in the two-mile at New Balance Nationals Indoor on Saturday, breaking Mary Cain's 9:38.68 national record that had stood since 2013 and claiming the meet record in the process.
Zang led wire to wire with a mile split of 4:41, then closed the final 1,600m in 4:53. The meet had pace lights set to Cain's record, and as the bell lap arrived it looked like they might catch her — but she found another gear, closing the final 400m in 35.43 to win by about 1.6 seconds.
Hear her race breakdown with Chris Chavez and Parker Valby.
