Shocked that his team might not make it past the first round of the UEFA European Cup in 1986, AC Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi set in motion plans for a European Super League. And unlike in 2021, plans were agreed and the Champions League was born.
The crucial shift to the modern world, the prioritisation of content over jeopardy, of revenue-generation over sporting merit, had been accepted.
